Developing Literary Translation in Wales
Developing Literary Translation in Wales is a new programme supported by the Arts Council of Wales and organised in collaboration with our sister organisation Wales Literature Exchange and partners Llenyddiaeth Cymru / Literature Wales and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru / National Theatre of Wales. The programme aims to advance literary translation form Welsh to English to extend readership for the work of Welsh-language writers. The programme consists of a series of workshops translating prose, poetry and theatre which will take place in autumn 2024 and will culminate in an industry day bringing together literary translation actors from around Wales in the National Library in Aberystwyth in early 2025.
Workshops developing translation skills of emerging translators and authors wishing to explore self-translation in prose and poetry will take place on 21-22 September in Caernarfon, facilitated by Nici Beech, Ifor ap Glyn, Megan Angharad Hunter and Iestyn Tyne.
A theatre translation workshop facilitate by Fflur Dafydd, Nici Beech and Rhian Davies will take place on 28th September in Carmarthen. Participants will be working on a translation into English of an extract of one of the following
three Welsh-language plays, included in the 2024 selection of plays recommended for translation by Eurodram, the European network for translating drama.
