25 May 2016 — 5 June 2016
Hay-on-Wye

It’s a busy time for one of our Literary Europe Live partners in Wales, UK, as they prepare to host the 29th Hay Festival of Literature.

Over a 12 day period between 25 May – 5 June 2016, the Festival holds more than 700 different events and attracts around 250,000 visitors to the small town of Hay on Wye in Powys.

At a special event in the Summer House at 4pm on Saturday 28 May, Wales PEN Cymru and our sister organisation Wales Literature Exchange will announce the English-language winner of the 2016 Translation Challenge prize of £250.

This year’s challenge was to translate the Spanish poem ‘El Conejo y la Chistera’ by Mexican poet Pedro Serrano.

The judge of the English-language translations is Professor Richard Gwyn from Cardiff University , whilst Ned Thomas (President of the Mercator Institute at Aberystwyth University) adjudicates on Welsh-language submissions. The Welsh- language winner will be announced at the National Eisteddfod in August 2016.

During the event at Hay’s Summer House, there will also be a chance to hear presentations by refugee writers and to find out more about Wales PEN Cymru’s future plans to work with refugee writers in Wales.

The full programme can be found on the Hay Festival website.
