Welsh authors at the Cairo Book Fair 2020
Welsh authors Gary Raymond and Lloyd Markham attended the Cairo Book Fair to meet readers of their books brought out in Arabic by the Egyptian publisher Al Arabi. They took part in events at the book fair and appeared on Egyptian TV.
The Arabic translation used a quirky detail from Lloyd Markham’s debut novel, an organise spacesuit the protagonist wears, to give the book a new title and the author appeared on stage in the eponymous spacesuit.
Author and editor of Wales Arts Review Gary Raymond used the visit to write his next novel Angels of Cairo, published in 2021.
The visit was part of the Literary Europe Live Plus project aimed at promoting European writing overseas and connecting the literary scenes of Europe with festivals and book events outside Europe.
