Georgian poetry translation workshop

9th – 14th September
Poets and translators from Georgia and the UK gather in Tbilisi for an intensive week of literary translation.
LAF’s first poetry translation workshop in Georgia aims to produce quality English translations of six Georgian poets for a forthcoming anthology in the New Voices from Europe and Beyond series.
The six poets from Georgia attending the workshop are Rati Amaglobeli, Shota Iatashvili, Gaga Nakhutsvrishvili, Lela Samniashvili and Maya Sarishvili. The work of the late poet and musician Irakli Charkviani (pictured above) will also be translated. A group of poets and translators from the UK will be working together with the poets to produce original new translations. They are Angela Jarman of Arc Publications, Ahdam Smart, Stephen Watts and LAF’s Nia Davies and Alexandra Büchler.

This workshop is organised by Literature Across Frontiers and the National Book Centre at the Ministry of Culture in Georgia. It is held in co-operation with Arc Publications and is supported by Arts Council England, Wales Arts International, the British Council and the Ministry of Culture.
The New Voices from Europe and Beyond anthology series introduces the work of six poets from a region or country to the English-reading world, often from languages that have had little or no poetry translated into English to date. Recent anthologies in the series have focused on Finnish, Armenian and Catalan poetry. Find out more about the series here.
